FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a computer to use the Recursion Studio?

No. The Recursion Studio is a standalone hardware video synthesizer. Just plug in power and an HDMI display and you're generating visuals. No computer, no software, no drivers.

What can I plug into the CV inputs?

The 8 CV inputs accept 0-10V signals (original RS) or bipolar -5V to +5V signals (RS 4K). They're compatible with Eurorack modular synths, semi-modular synths like the Moog Mother-32, expression pedals, or any device that outputs control voltage. The RS 4K can even accept audio-rate signals up to 192kHz for oscilloscope music.

Will it work with my modular synth?

Yes. The Recursion Studio has 8 CV inputs compatible with Eurorack voltage levels, plus MIDI DIN in/out for non-CV gear. You can use CV to modulate any visual parameter in real time — color, geometry, speed, feedback, and hundreds more.

Can I use it without music?

Absolutely. The Recursion Studio generates visuals entirely on its own using its built-in instruments and internal modulation system. Music, CV, and MIDI are optional inputs that add external control, but the synth is fully self-contained.

What is the difference between the Recursion Studio and the Recursion Studio 4K?

The Recursion Studio 4K has 10x the processing power, 8x the RAM, dual HDMI outputs, 4K resolution support, 64GB onboard NVMe storage, a dedicated 4K HDMI input, onboard WiFi, and over 100 new processing modules. Both run the same operating system and are fully compatible with each other's content.

What resolution and frame rate does it output?

The original Recursion Studio outputs 1080p HD via HDMI. The Recursion Studio 4K supports 4K at 30fps, 2K at 60fps, 1080p at 120fps, or 720p at even higher frame rates — selectable per session.

Is the Recursion Studio 4K available now?

The RS 4K is currently in Early Access preorder. The hardware is 100% done, tested, and validated. Software is still being finalized. Shipping begins June 2026 from Brooklyn, NY.

Will the price of the Recursion Studio 4K increase?

Yes. The retail price will increase to $1,750 when the synth reaches its 1.0 release. The current Early Access price is lower.

Can I use it for live performances?

Yes. The Recursion Studio has a dedicated PERFORM mode designed for live VJ use. You can map any visual parameter to the 5 encoders, 5 drum pads, MIDI controllers, or CV sources for real-time control. It generates visuals with zero latency — no rendering, no buffering.

What instruments are built in?

The original Recursion Studio ships with 6 instruments: FRAXTAL (fractal feedback), INTERFERENCE (wave interference patterns), WAVIBOI (3D oscilloscope curves), WAVIGRL (2D retro CRT oscilloscope), CATPARTY, and HYPERFLUX (recursive wave feedback). The RS 4K adds 3+ new instruments including a freeform instrument with no predefined structure, plus over 100 new modules.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes! Some countries will have additional fees such as VAT added at checkout. As of April 2026, only US power supplies are in stock — international buyers may need a power adapter until other regional models are available.

What about the original Recursion Studio?

The original Recursion Studio will continue to be on sale as long as there is demand and will be supported and developed alongside the new model. Both run the same operating system. Major updates like the new UI, NDI, DMX, and OSC support are all planned for the original synth as well.

Will you have a trade-in plan?

Possibly. We're seriously thinking about it but need to evaluate the economic practicality over the next several months. If implemented, it would apply retroactively to anyone who has purchased both synths.

Can it run Doom?

If you personally buy 20 of them, yes.
